an affordable render farm?

Occasionally I just need one frame rendering that would normally take 12-24 hours but so far, ALL the render farms I've seen would cost the entire project budget just to render one or maybe two stills!

Any tips on where to look?

There are lots of render farms if you search on Google,but affordable one is few.I suggest Fox render farm,you can submit render online in the cloud: better, and faster.

Mmm I use https://us.rebusfarm.net/en/ to me is really fair when it comes to rendering time/ Pricing, if you haven't decided yet, try Rebus, they offer free credit for starters so it won't really cost you anything, plus they have one of the easiest interfaces that there is out there, really good for begginers!
